MacBook: To Plug or Unplug Battery Charger

Battery technology advances. The web has many different suggestions on how a user should operate their portable computer (charge when 20%, unplug when over 80%; do not leave charger after reaching 100%, etc. etc.). Most recent discussions with Apple Support brought to light 'recommended' battery use and charging protocol to optimize battery life. Here are basic bullet points:

  • Apple battery life is based on Charge Cycles
  • MacBook Pro has a 1,000 Charge Cycle limit (when battery is 'consumed)
  • Reduce charge cycles by leaving the MacBook connected to the AC power adapter versus unplug/use/plug-in/charge/unplug when using
  • Three separate Apple Support reps offered the same recommendation (and two stated they leave their MacBooks connected all the time).
